Who are the Tuckahoe Jaycees? The Tuckahoe Jaycees is a not-for-profit organization that provides young adults, between the ages of 21 and 40 years old, leadership training through community service. Through this type of leadership training, members gain knowledge of the tools needed to build bridges of success for themselves in the areas of business development, management skills, individual training, community service, and international connections. How did the Jaycees begin? The United States Jaycees were established in 1920 to provide opportunities for young men to develop personal and leadership skills through service to others. The Jaycees later expanded to include women, reflecting the growing influence and leadership of women in America. For the past 82 years, the Jaycees have been a force for good in America and around the world. The Jaycees helped establish airmail services in America with Jaycee Charles Lindbergh, and have raised millions of dollars for causes such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the March of Dimes. They have built parks, playgrounds, hospitals, ball fields, and housing for the elderly while conducting service and support programs in thousands of communities nationwide. Who are some past Jaycees? Jaycees can be found in all walks of life: governmental leaders such as President Bill Clinton and past President Gerald Ford, business tycoons such as Domino's Pizza mogul Tom Monaghan, registered nurse and former Miss America Kaye Lani Rae Rafko-Wilson, sports heroes like basketball great Larry Bird - name the field and Jaycees can be found at the forefront. With the focus of the nation on volunteerism, from the smallest towns to the largest cities, the Jaycees are enlarging areas of opportunity for young people. In Tuckahoe, we're working hard to make a difference. (and we're having a lot of fun, too!) If you'd like more information on how to get involved, visit one of our meetings or events or click on Join Tuckahoe! and send us an email that you would like more information. What is the mission and vision of the Tuckahoe Jaycees? Our mission is to provide young adults with opportunities to develop personal and leadership skills, through local community service and organizational involvement, while expanding the Jaycees organization in our community. What is the Tuckahoe Jaycees Foundation? The Tuckahoe Jaycees Foundation is a corporation organized under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was created to support the community development projects of The Tuckahoe Jaycees, Inc. which are charitable in nature. The Internal Revenue Service has recognized it as a 501 c 3 organization, which means it is the equivalent of a charity. Accordingly, donations made by the public to the Foundation are tax-deductible. This differs from the tax treatment of donations made by the public to the Chapter, which are not deductible even when made in support of a community development project. The Foundation has passed a resolution that requires a majority vote of its Board of Trustees before a Chapter project can be supported. Thus far, the Foundation has supported the Chapter's Independence Day Celebrations from 1990-2000, 2006 and the Sgt. Santa Christmas Ball from 1994 - 1996. Support of a project by the Foundation means that the Foundation will allow all gross receipts of the project to be run through the Foundation's treasury. I.R.S. regulations require that the Foundation, after the payment of expenses, distributes all net proceeds to charity. The I.R.S. allows, however, the Foundation to retain a portion of net proceeds to cover administrative expenses and to maintain a reserve for seed money and against losses of future Chapter projects supported by the Foundation. It is important to emphasize the Foundation does not have members and, other than the management of its bank account, assumes no responsibility for the management of any project of the Chapter that it supports. Also note that the Chapter's President, Community Development Vice President and the Corporate Sponsorship Director are voting Trustees of the Foundation's Board of Trustees.
